Lee Hills Chair in Free-Press Studies

Kathy Kiely, the National Press Club Journalism Institute Press Freedom Fellow, is the Lee Hills Chair in Free-Press Studies at the Missouri School of Journalism.

A veteran journalist, Kiely's reporting and editing career has included work with WAMU-FM, Bill Moyers, Bloomberg Politics, National Journal and USA Today, as well as with the Sunlight Foundation. She also has served as the Washington bureau chief for the Houston Post and Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Kiely has taught at University of New Hampshire, American University, George Washington University and Princeton University.

The Club's first Press Freedom Fellow, Kiely has been instrumental in actions by the Club and Institute on behalf of Emilio Gutierrez-Soto, a John P. Aubuchon Press Freedom Award winner currently being detained by U.S. immigration officials in El Paso. Kiely joined the University of Missouri faculty in July. She teaches, conducts research and engages in public outreach activities to foster understanding of the importance of press freedom. The Lee Hills Chair in Free-Press Studies is one of 10 endowed chairs at the school.
